A pair of march tacky horses munch contentedly on grass in their field at the Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn on Sept. 16. The marsh tacky is a rare breed of horse native to South Carolina. A descendent of horses brought to the area by Spanish colonists, it is well suited to the swamps and marshes of the Lowcountry, and was once common in the area.  jkarr  9/16/11

Critter Management's Joe Maffo, with pole, and Mark Carinus try to flush an alligator from a storm sewer pipe in Hilton Head Plantation on June 24. The nine-foot-long female had been trapped in a pipe running beneath Seabrook Drive for some time. After it was safely captured, it was released back into the wild.  jkarr  6/24/11
